canyonwalker: My other car is a pair of hiking boots (in beauty I walk)
Hawk and I have made our own Super Bowl Sunday tradition. Since we don't care for sportsball we take advantage of the day everyone is inside guzzling chips and guacamole while glued to their TVs to go hiking instead. For this year's not-watch party we drove up to the North Bay, to the Marin Municipal Water District on the flanks of Mt. Tamalpais.

What's there? Among other things, a bunch of waterfall trails. And the weather we've had the past week— rainy most of the week but clear and sunny Saturday and Sunday— made it a perfect time to hike waterfalls. In particular we headed to the Cataract Falls Trail, with an option of doing Carson Falls nearby as a two-fer later in the day.

Cataract Falls Trail, Marin Municipal Water District (Feb 2025)

It's a surprisingly long drive out to the Cataract Trail. ...Not because of how far it is; it was only 70 miles or so from home, most of those miles on freeways. But the last 10 or so miles winding into the mountains from the town of Fairfax, California are on narrow, twisty Fairfax-Bolinas Road. Making it even slower than normal was the fact that there are still a few construction spots where Caltrans is still repairing washout damage from a few years ago.

Speaking of a few years ago, it's been two years since our previous visit to Cataract Falls. So while we've been here a few times before, it was clearly time to visit again.

Alpine Lake, Marin Municipal Water District (Feb 2025)

The trail begins at the back corner of MMWD's Lake Alpine on the flanks of Mt. Tamalpais. As you can see in the pic looking across the lake it's a clear and sunny day. But quickly the trail turns into the deep Cataract Canyon, and suddenly everything is cool and damp and dark.

The trail passes by several waterfalls as it climbs the canyon. For many of them, like those in the latter two photos here, there are small use-trails to get closer to the water. One of these photos I made while actually standing in the water. Yay, sturdy hiking boots instead of shitty trail shoes.

There are more individual waterfalls on this trail than I can even count, let alone share photos for. I've included these two for now. I'll post a Part Two soon with photos of the biggest cascade.

Stay tuned for more!

canyonwalker: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Travel! (planes trains and automobiles)
Today I flew over to Las Vegas. It's a short flight, 386 miles by air and just over an hour from takeoff to touchdown. Today things ran pretty much on time, no drama. My Southwest flight was even more empty than full. Just 50 seats out of 175 were occupied. I guess they need the bigger plane in Vegas to help people still leaving the gambling mecca after Super Bowl weekend.

My reasons for coming to Vegas have nothing to do with sports— or gambling, for that matter. I'm here for the next week on a combination of 2-3 trips.

First is my company's annual Sales Kick-Off (SKO). That starts with registration and a reception tonight, followed by two days of presentations tomorrow and Wednesday. Tagging onto that, on Thursday and Friday, is a technical kick-off (TKO) summit for technical customer-facing people in the company. TKO ends Friday at 5pm, but instead of flying home Friday evening I've chosen to stay in town (on my own dime) through the Presidents' Day holiday weekend and have Hawk fly out to join me. We'll do outdoorsy stuff around Las Vegas for three days then fly home together next Monday night.

For the work part of my trip, for the next 4 nights, I'm staying at the Vdara just off the Strip. Here's a photo from my room:

My room at the Vdara in Las Vegas (Feb 2025)

It's my first stay at the Vdara. This property is somewhat unique in Vegas as it's known for— as the check-in agent apprised me— no gambling and no smoking. That's fine by me as I've never liked smoking (I spent more than 18 years of my life routinely ill from it) and it's been a long time since I've seen a decent game in Vegas.

The hotel so far strikes me as a combination of swank and cheap. Swank, because the view as I entered the room (photo above) seemed swank. But there's evidence of subtle cost-cutting measures everywhere. For example, in that kitchenette over on the right there's no kitchen utensils. There's an electric stove top... but nary a pot nor a plate nor even a fork. There's a small card in the cupboard instructing guests to call housekeeping if they need equipment. But the most annoying cost-cutting (or maybe it's just a gross 21st century oversight) is that there's a nice little work desk over by the windows... with no power outlet within 6' except one hidden in a closet behind the cable TV box.

Speaking of the window, the check-in agent touted that he upgraded me to a "partial fountain view" room.

Well, out the far right corner of the window, just outside the frame of this photo, I can kinda, sorta, see where the edge of the Bellagio's fountains might be. They're not running right now. What you see in the photo above is the other 95% of the view out my windows. Yes, it's miles and miles of concrete, blacktop, and desert.

BTW, my company is apparently paying $515/night for this.
